The mission of the placement

In the primary school there is one class with pupils who are mixed age.

Activities

You will directly work with children in the primary school, providing them with individual support in all of their activities (morning community circle, practical activities like assistance during dressing or mealtime, physical activities, relaxation techniques, music therapy, art therapy, snoezelen therapy etc.) During the classes, you will individually help pupils in activities like painting, writing, reading and with other activities according to the daily schedule.

You will also assist with movement pupils in wheelchairs during outdoor walks. You are more than welcome to use your gifts and skills during the classes. If you are a creative person, we would greatly appreciate it if you could help us make seasonal decorations and decorate the school. You can enrich students and workers with activities that are typical of your country or that you like to do.

Preferred personal traits:

  • Empathetic
  • Helpful

  • Be willing to learn Czech language

Events throughout the year:

During the year, you will have the chance to participate in performances with the students which are organized  for parents and other organizations for special events such as Christmas holidays, Easter holidays, Mother’s Day or New Year’s service.

You will learn how to work with children with disabilities, but also how to be more patient and supportive. You will be given ideas and learn how to work with technology that has been created for disabled people.

Growing through challenges:

  • Neither the Centre users nor the workers speak a foreign language. Therefore, you have to be prepared that in the first week you will communicate by your hands and feet or invent other communication techniques such as using pictures or drawing. Sometimes it’s enough to give them your smile.
  • Overcoming the fear of working with children with disabilities - you will learn how to be unafraid of helping people with disabilities.
  • Overcoming various prejudices – learning how to keep an open mind and how to work personally with each pupil or student.
