The mission of the placement

The socio-therapeutic workshop in Nový Jičín is focused on giving people with mental or combined disabilities and autism the opportunity to spend their time in an active and enjoyable way, while learning new skills and meeting new people to maintain and develop their social skills and have a better chance of getting a job.

Activities

Your main activity will be to support and assist clients, during various therapeutic workshops, such as pottery, textile - art workshop, basketry workshop, creative workshop and gardening. Together with the clients you will make small gifts and many interesting decorations. You will also cooperate with social workers, accompany and assist users during specific techniques such as art therapy, music therapy, morning devotions, relaxation techniques or theater therapy, since the center has its own puppet theater.

You will also be expected to assist in serving snacks, lunch or making coffee for or with clients. The center regularly organizes presentations and talks for clients on various topics (e.g. finance, health, social skills, social networks, work safety). As part of this activity, you will talk with the clients, teach them the basics of a foreign language or make a presentation about your country, culture and customs.

Events throughout the year:

The Effatha Nový Jičín center participates in various public events, such as exhibitions where clients present products they have made. The center also participates in different public events such as Social services days, Family day or Day of Silence etc. Several times a year, the center takes its puppet theater to perform at special schools. Because the center tries to prepare clients for real work, once in a while they organize excursions to factories so that clients can see what it looks like at work. As a volunteer, you will join all mentioned activities and accompany clients during them.

By participating in this project you will learn different therapeutic workshop techniques such as pottery, textile - art workshop, basketry workshop, creative workshop, gardening, relaxation techniques (snoezelen concept) and theater therapy and you will be involved in problematics of work with adults with mental or combined disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.

Growing through challenges:

Neither the Centre users or the workers speak a foreign language. Therefore, you have to be prepared that in the first week you will communicate by your hands and feet or invent other communication techniques such as using pictures or drawing.
