The mission of the placement

The socio-therapeutic workshop in Frýdek-Místek is focused on work with adults between 18 and 65 years of age with mental disabilities, or with associated disabilities. The service is focused on giving people with disabilities the opportunity to spend their time in an active and enjoyable way, while learning new skills and meeting new people to maintain and develop their social skills and working habits to have a better chance of getting a job.

Activities

You will support and assist clients, during various therapeutic workshops, such as creative and woodcraft workshops. You will teach clients the work procedures (woodworking, cutting, sawing). You have the opportunity to suggest other ways of working or propose changes. You and the client will produce many interesting things and decorations, but mainly you will train them social skills and work habits. Last but not least, you will be involved in workshop cleaning and organization (sorting of materials).

You will assist clients in practicing skills such as basic hygiene habits (wash face, brush teeth), getting dressed, putting on shoes, orientation, locking and unlocking doors, preparation of simple meals, making phone calls, handling finances and using electrical appliances.

You will cooperate with social workers to lead and participate in a debating club where clients learn how to defend their own opinions, practice communication skills and discuss various topics with each other. As part of this activity, you will have space to teach clients the basics of a foreign language, explain the sense of volunteering or make a presentation about your country and its traditions. You are welcome to show your talents and initiate your own ideas.

Events throughout the year:

The Effatha Frýdek-Místek participates in various public events, for example, exhibitions where clients present their products, introduce their working methods or help to make coffee for visitors. The center is always open to join and visit any public events to involve their clients in social life. You will have the opportunity to accompany the clients and participate.

By participating in this project you will learn different therapeutic workshop techniques such as creative and woodcraft (machine sewing, paper work - quilling, plaster work, cutting and gluing, pedigree knitting and other decorative techniques) and concrete methods of working and supporting adults with disabilities.

Growing through challenges:

Neither the Centre users nor the workers speak a foreign language. Therefore, you have to be prepared that in the first week you will communicate by your hands and feet or invent other communication techniques such as using pictures or drawing.
You will probably live alone or with a hosting family, as the other volunteers are in different locations, but not too far from each other, so you can visit them easily. :-)
